Excellent article Safi. It succinctly brings out the formalisation of G2 and USA’s quiet acceptance of China as a co-holder to underwrite emerging global risks. It appears that Trump is alongside Taiwan playing a delicate game of carrot and stick with China. He announced arms package to Taiwan, yet quietly allowed KMT’s head to go to China to meet Xi. It appears that withholding Taiwan package was an easy quid pro quo to seek Chinese acceptance of USA’s central role in West Asia. You have rightly pointed out Trumps’s quiet burial of Indo-Pacific as a pointer to his acceptance of Chinese core interests in East Asia, which should concern Japan, Australia and India. His potshots at our Sindoor claim, lionising Munir, and raising tariff screws points to some kind of agreement as to the sphere of influence into which India would belong. So the nuts and bolts of emerging G2 would be worth watching and we would keenly look forward to new light in this area.
